Description
Helen E. Hockinson Original Ink & Wash New Yorker Helen E. Hockinson Original Charcoal & Watercolor Original Helen E. Hockinson cartoon done for the New Yorker Magazine in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Hockinson did 68 covers and over 1800 cartoons for New Yorker until her death in 1949. This ink and wash shows one of her classic high society matrons in an exchange with a man working at a wine store. Hockinson signed and captioned the work underneath: "I thought I'd stop in and tell you that the luncheon was a huge success." The work is stamped on the back as copyright of the New Yorker Magazine, with a similar note on the back of the matting it was found with. A search turned up no results for this particular piece in the magazine, so it is likely that it never made it to print and remains an unpublished cartoon done for the New Yorker. This piece at one point belonged to Earle MacAusland, who was a publisher and the founder of Gourmet magazine in 1941. His name is written on the back of the matting. Approximate size: 10.75" x 13.75" x 0.2" Approximate weight: 0.3 lbs
